Sheen started acting in 1974 at the age of nine, appearing in a small role alongside his father in the television movie The Execution of Private Slovik. His film career began in 1984 with a role in the Cold War teen drama Red Dawn. Charlie had his first major role in the Vietnam War drama Platoon in 1986. His bad boy behavior, however, is rumored to have started long before then, as he was expelled from high school just weeks before graduation for a combination of poor grades and a tendency to not show up.

Charlie Sheen has a long history of brawling and drunken or drug-fueled accidents. Here’s a few of the highlights:

In 1990, he accidentally shot his then-fiancee, Kelly Preston, in the leg and though it was a minor wound, it needed two stitches. Their relationship ended shortly after the incident.

In 1995, Charlie Sheen was named as one of many clients who visited brothels owned by Heidi Fleiss in her court case. When questioned about this, Sheen responded “I love sex and I can afford it”.

In 1998, Sheen tried injecting cocaine, accidentally giving himself an overdose. He was hospitalized, but discharged from the hospital quickly. His father Martin reported him for violation of parole. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and Charlie was sent to rehab.

In 2005, Denise Richards, Charlie Sheen’s then-wife, while she was still pregnant with their daughter Lola, Richards filed for divorce, accusing him of abusing drugs and alcohol and threatening Richards with violence.

In 2009, Charlie Sheen was arrested on charges of domestic violence, including second-degree assault and menacing, against his wife Brooke Mueller.

In 2010, Charlie Sheen took a break from Two and a Half Men to voluntarily enter a rehab facility.

Despite all of this, Charlie Sheen’s sitcom Two and a Half Men is America’s Number One Comedy, according to CBS. People are lining up in droves to watch the show, and during the Winter Olympics last year, a re-run of the show beat both American Idol and the Olympics.

In March of 2010, Sheen’s press representatives announced that he was leaving rehab and returning to work on the popular show. If Charlie does go, we will miss him and those shirts he made famous. But then again, he is pretty well-set, and he’s free to decide whether he stays or goes. With his successful career and new family, he can pretty much relax and focus on family time. We can only wish him well.

As if being the highest paid actor on primetime comedy television today wasn’t enough, accolades and honor continue to be heaped on Charlie Sheen’s name and body of work. Already, he is being recognized for his work on television as an outstanding comedic actor.

Sheen has recently received yet another nomination for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for the 2009 Emmy Awards. This is the fourth such nomination of one of the highest distinctions bestowed upon all artists for television, as well as the teams that operate the behind-the-scenes affairs of the show. Bestowed upon by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series award this year will be contested by Sheen and peers Alec Baldwin, Jermaine Clement, Jim Parsons, Tony Shaloub and Steve Carell, all comic maestros in their own right.

The year also has him nominated for yet another glorious distinction. This time it is for the People’s Choice Awards, and he’s competing for 2009′s Favorite Male TV Star. These awards differ as they are decided almost completely by votes from the viewing public, instead of a ruling board or body of judges.

Sheen has been nominated four times for both awards, in just as many years too. Despite his consistent track record and frequent nods, the Emmy Award and People’s Choice Award trophies at the end have continued to elude him thus far. Could things turn around in the near future? Time can reveal some surprises, after all.

While these anecdotes may lead you to think that Charlie Sheen is being overlooked by judges and voters, he’s also been on the other side of the tape and come away as a winner at times. Most significant of these moments was his walking away with the Golden Globe Award back in 2002. This was for the award of Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Not only did this add to his impressive resumé, but it also solidified him as a bankable, respected television star.

After what must have been years of living under the dark cloud of a tabloid scandal, an incriminating quote and a messy post-divorce fight in the press and showbiz news beats, Mr. Sheen has been keeping himself quite busy. And in getting work done, his results have been paying off big time. Reports have come in that the tv sitcom star is the highest-paid actor on television today, and given the success of the show thus far, it seems like he’s not done yet.

Those looking for proof have only to look around the scene and compare notes. News reports have indicated that Sheen collects an astounding sum of $875,000 per episode of his top-rated CBS show. That figure leads all actors of television comedy today. He leads the list of the highest earning TV actors, with estimates pegging him earning more than twice the actresses of Desperate Housewives, and amazingly, more than a whopping $300,000 more than Kiefer Sutherland, who with 24 is the highest drama actor for the small screen. Other top earners include Hugh Laurie of House M.D. fame, Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni of Law and Order: SVU and Ryan Seacrest of Fox’s American Idol.

His Emmy Award-winning show is on it’s sixth season and has been renewed for another additional three seasons more. He’s expected to be making it big night in and night out. With the typical TV show season lasting up to 22 episodes a year, Charlie Sheen takes in something close to an amazing $20 million a year!

This fantastic bit of news comes at the heels of his family welcoming new twins Bob and Max from his current wife, Brooke Mueller, and from recent reports of reconciliation between him and Denise Richards, his ex-wife and mother to his daughters Sam and Lola. Richards was reported to have had dinner with Sheen and his family, and by the looks of things, everything is turning out to be just fine.

With all these things going on, its’ incredible to know how great Charlie Sheen is able to keep putting up incredible work on television week in and week out. Hopefully, things will only get better for him.
